Cheri J. Martin

Look for a cloud of dust and you might find Cheri in the middle of it as she works on a soap stone or alabaster sculpture of nature's finest.

Twenty five years ago, Cheri and her husband Marty started a small business called "The Wood Works" which features burl clocks and numerous other wooden craft items. Little did Cheri know that 5 years later she would turn from wood to a love of working in stone.

In 1987, Cheri and Marty moved from the "flatland" of the Bay Area to Sonora, CA located in the foothills of the Sierras. Shortly thereafter, while on an outing through the Mother Lode, Cheri discovered soap stone and decided to give it a try.

Self taught and through trial and error, her love of nature found its way into the heart of the stone. This led to sculptures of various animals, but horses have always been a favorite of this foothill artist and it shows in her work.

Cheri's sculptures have been featured at Ironstone Vineyards, Bear Cloud Gallery, The Wild West Film Festival, and numerous art shows yearly throughout Northern California.

Marty still works in the shop and is wood turning beautiful segmented peppermills, bowls, plates, boxes and much more. They make a good team. The wood and stone work complements each other's talents and artistic flare.

The Martins can be contacted at dcmartin715@sbcglobal.net or by phone at (209) 743-6007.
